They Called Themselves

Sometimes a topic is so difficult that you just simply do not want to read a lot about it. Using oral histories, newspaper articles, diary entries, and congressional documents, the book They Called Themselves the K.K.K. by Susan Campbell Bartoletti describes a war torn South and how the Klu Klux Klan came to be all those years ago in Pulaski, Tennessee. Breaking the book up into sections such as Religion, Education, and Voting, the reader learns about how each topic was heavily affected by the K.K.K. during the Reconstruction period. This nonfiction title is intended for Teens but appeals to all ages, particularly for people who want to learn more about the post-bellum South but might not want to read a lengthy adult title.
